Description
Course Purpose
The American Red Cross Lifeguard Recertification course is designed for currently certified lifeguards (or those whose certification has expired within 30 days). The course reviews and updates participants on the knowledge and skills necessary to:
- Prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies.
- Provide professional-level care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries, and sudden illnesses until EMS personnel take over.
Program Objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Review and demonstrate the professionalism required of a lifeguard.
- Refresh their ability to identify distressed swimmers, active drowning victims, and passive drowning victims.
- Review proper scanning, rotations, and surveillance techniques.
- Safely perform assists, rescues, and extrications (including spinal motion restriction techniques).
- Review procedures for responding to both water and medical emergencies.
- Provide care using a resuscitation mask and BVM resuscitator.
- Demonstrate high-quality CPR and AED use as a single rescuer and as part of a team.
- Work effectively with a team to implement an Emergency Action Plan (EAP).
- Review and demonstrate care for sudden illnesses and injuries in aquatic settings.
Age Requirement
Participants must be 15 years or older.
Eligibility & Prerequisites
- Must hold a current American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification or one that has expired within 30 days.
- Participants will be required to successfully complete:
- Swim-test pretest (deep or shallow water depending on certification).
- In-water skill assessments.
- Written test covering core lifeguarding knowledge.
What to Bring
- Proof of current (or recently expired) lifeguarding certification.
- Bathing suit and towel.
- Pocket face mask (provided free for full lifeguarding courses).
- Goggles for practice swimming (optional, not for timed event).
- Lock for lockers.
- Bottled water and snacks.
- Comfortable clothing for classroom activities.
- Pen and paper for notes.
- Optional lunch/meal (nearby food options available).
- Contact lens case/solution if wearing contacts.
